Hey check out the latest blog on SQL Azure and scaling out with SQL Azure Federations. Cool stuff. Find it here. I notice that it isn’t perfect, but nothing brand new is. If you compare to sharding in MongoDB you’ll find some good features and some lacking features in both; Mongo seems to do more automatically, but Azure allows you to control a bit more programatically. MongoDB may be a tad easier to implement, but Azure leverages code that is recognizable. Great stuff!
There are a few other blogs over the past two weeks on this site, so I suggest that you check these out as well. Pretty good reading – again, it’s not perfect, not automatic, has no load balancing, and might be a tad difficult to implement with some administration gotchas. But, it’s definitely a start, and bypasses the need to have multiple database files – I’ve been wanting a single DB file on SQL Server for 15 years and we’re about to get one. I think in a few iterations this could be unreal!
Thanks for reading,
Lee Everest
