Here’s a short and sweet video on the new SQL Server 2008 R2 Best-Practice Analyzer (BPA) that you should check out; they changed this thing up a bit and now it requires some prerequisites for the install to work that the older versions didn’t need, including the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Manager among others. This tool came out a couple of months ago, but the vid is new and has some good info.
If you need to read about the tool go to the MSDN page for more on it. I recently used this at a client and it saved me some time collecting info on a couple of servers…you can get collect all of the data manually – no magic here – but it helps fetch info much faster, plus you get some input on SQL Server settings that Microsoft recommends. If you have lots of SQL Servers, this is where it would come in super handy. Check it out and let me know what you think of the tool. Using this, MAP, RML, and others gives you what you need to find out how a SQL Server is running and why. Some day if they could combine all of them…
Thanks much
