It’s good to see some things never change
So I worked at Transamerica Life Insurance – Long-Term Care Division in Bedford, TX for about four years, several years ago. There I was reminded of how I was a “LAN” person who worked on the “PC”, and that our SQL Server database was comprised of a bunch of “files and records”. LOL. They had a mainframe there, Big Blue, with a bunch of mainframe programmers as you might expect. And they were always, always chiding anyone in IT that wasn’t a main framer. Imagine that. If they only knew that we made as much fun of them as they did us. We were probably meaner too; we made fun of their hair, clothes made of polyester, earth shoes, etc. you know, the clothes that you wonder where they even bought them. A scraggly and disheveled bunch no doubt!
It has been awhile though that I’ve been around a large group of them like I am now, and it’s good to see that, collectively, they haven’t changed a bit. Still sorta rough around the edges with terrible jokes. The reason for my blog – I was in the break room busily, happily, and joyfully heating my lunch, minding my own business, when two of them ganged up on me. Noticing my Microsoft lunch bag, they were quick to point out that “oh I’d never seen one of those” and (now the fun part) “is it buggy?” OMG. And then followed up beautifully by asking me “Do you need to patch it?” Wow, now that’s heavy man. I’m not even sure if I smiled at them, although if I didn’t I meant to. Oh happy day, eh? <hack> <cough>
More to come – I’m sure that they’ve more in them to top these jim dandys.

I suppose the next joke I hear will be about the Token Ring apps we’re building for the Wyse terminals?
