The greatness of ctl + b…sorely missed.
I got one of those inserts in a recent issue of SQL Server magazine the other day listing all of the cool shortcuts in SQL Server Management Studio, think it was written by the folks over at Quest. Even in this month’s issue of SQL Mag (June 2009) Otey had a column entitled “SQL Server Management Studio Keyboard Shortcuts”. Yet as cool as any of these shortcuts may or may not be, none are equal to the SQL Server 7 and 2000 ctl + b! Other folks have also been looking for Microsoft to reinstate this feature, but so far it hasn’t come to fruition. For instance, there is a request at Microsoft Connect asking for it, and a post or two on various discussion forums longing for the “beloved ctrl + b” feature.
What was it anyway you ask? Ctl + b allowed you to grab the splitter window in query analyzer (isqlw) and move it without having to pick up a mouse and manually move it. Why was this so great? Because as a developer was coding, he or she could quickly reposition it based on results and use the up/down arrow keys to resize as needed without having to stop coding. Also, even with a mouse, sometimes it was hard to position the cursor to actually grab the thing! Once you got used to using it, it really made things very nice while working in the development environment, believe me.
If you notice, you can run SSMS in SQL 2000 “mode” for the query editor, but unfortunately this feature doesn’t kick in. Hopefully they add it back in one of these releases soon.
