I enjoy blogging because it allows me to do the following: Research & Experiment- I find that I am oftentimes testing the limits of SQL Server, or an idea, or something that someone else says or writes about. Learn and then share ideas – I am always running into something, whether it’s a ... [More]

Moving packages just got easy. I worked on a large project last year at a global company that sells household items, and one thing that I liked about the project was the fact that they used ‘relative’ paths for their SSIS packages when referencing resources, such as text files, executables, xml fil... Great post on creating SQL counters. Found a nice post on the MSDN blogs by Jay on how to create a custom perfmon counter for SQL Server.  Good stuff!  I’ve always wondered about this back to, oh, SQL Server 7.0 at least, but I never knew how to create one and really didn’t have a reaso... [More]

Penton going Chapter 11. I read today that Penton Media, the outfit that runs SQL Server Magazine, Windows & .Net Magazine, and DevConnections and SQLServerconnections, will bail from it's debt by restructuring.  Read about this at the link below.  You know - I saw this coming several... [More]

Great posting by Jeff Atwood! Heads up, everyone - every day is International Backup Awareness Day!!! So a buddy of mine today at lunch goes "Hey man, you backed up your blog lately?"  I says, "naaa, my hosting company does all of that, right??. Uh, wrong.  I go out to m... [More]

Doesn't appear to be fixed! I thought that in SQL Server 2008 sp1, the ORDER BY bug was fixed, but it isn't. We ran into it yesterday.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926292.  Scanning the sp1 fix list, apparently this one wasn't added to it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968369. ... [More]

Cool. But want real performance? Get one of these… I saw a blog by Paul Nielsen today on putting tempdb in ram via the software ram download called RamDisk. Actually this is pretty cool!  I’ve never seen it before, but it looks like something i’d like to geek with. Essenti... [More]

Introduction The Script Component in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) seems to be a somewhat inauspicious data flow task that is oftentimes avoided or misunderstood by some. When you open the task, you don’t see much - a few methods, a couple of references, and that’s about it. Tr... [More]

This is what you do when you're bored. I saw a post on www.social.msdn.com about Excel data sources and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) that was answered by two folks, and not particularly correct by either one I might add. Someone asked a two-part question - the first was… “How... [More]

Looks like a cool presentation. I got notice yesterday of the SQL Server 2008 R2 Airlift presentation - seems like it would be very informative, although I have no idea what companies will be the first to bite on a system such as the "Madison" initiative.  Quite expensive, brand new, and unpr...
